“I don’t want to do this,” I grumbled as Edel and I walked down the silver-lined corridors of the ship the next day.

“Kelsey’s sound. For an alpha.” Edel shrugged. “I wish I hadn’t gotten called away from our lunch, I could have explained. Her and the captain go way back. But there’s nothing between them.”

“Do you seriously think that?”

Edel nodded emphatically and turned a corner. I followed. I didn’t want to meet Kelsey but I wanted to be lost on this ship even less, and I still didn’t know my way around. “Two alphas can’t be in a relationship. They would fight too much.”

“Why would they argue?” Surely they would see eye-to-eye about most things.

“Not argue. Fight. Break each other’s spleens and rip off ears and such.”

“Weird. And also gross.” I couldn’t imagine why anyone needed to fight and cause one another bodily harm like that. Alphas were just bizarre.

“I’m not saying it’s impossible, but very rare.”

“So Kelsey could be with him?”

“No. The whole ship would know. They’d both be covered in bruises and bigger injuries. And we would hear them bellowing insults at one another up and down the ship.”

I thought about this. I had never seen Thorun covered in bruises, and Kelsey had appeared to be a picture of health, too.

“Alphas are strange,” I concluded.

“You got that right. So let’s go and meet a strange alpha who hasn’t done anything bad with the captain.”

I nodded, feeling more confident.
